Teaching
My teaching philosophy is grounded in fostering an inclusive, critically engaging, and student-centered learning environment that encourages students to examine philosophical, ethical, and sociopolitical issues with intellectual rigor and empathy. In my teaching experience at institutions such as Monash University, Deakin University, and Box Hill Institute, I have developed and delivered a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that span both core philosophical domains—such as ethics, justice, and political philosophy—as well as interdisciplinary fields like sociology and political Islam. These courses have been designed to bridge abstract theoretical frameworks with real-world applications, providing students with tools to engage critically with global and local social phenomena.
I prioritise active learning in both face-to-face and digital modes, encouraging students to become co-producers of knowledge rather than passive recipients. Through a pedagogy grounded in critical inquiry, I cultivate classrooms that value empathy, debate, and analytical rigour. In my role as Lecturer and Unit Coordinator for a postgraduate unit on Political Islam, for example, I designed and delivered an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrated sociological and political theories, using current events and case studies to illustrate the intersections of religion, power, and identity. This unit exemplified my broader approach: challenging students to draw on diverse epistemologies and to engage with global and local social phenomena critically.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for the semester and the wonderful unit you taught! I truly learnt a lot about Islam and the world it has created, and I'm glad to say it helped break down some misconceptions and bias I had previously. I filled in the evaluation forms too, and you and the unit deserved every word of praise!

experience
Monash Master Student- Political Islam Unit
I found Sara's enthusiasm and unique approach to politics to be really refreshing and practical. Over the past 5.5 years of studying
international relations and politics at Monash, this was the first unit that critically engaged in the politics of Islam and its role in
global politics. This has been a unit that has challenged my biases far more than any other, and I don't actually remember a unit that
discussed Islam in politics outside of terrorism before this unit. I have learnt a lot from this unit, and I feel that my academic
understanding of politics has become far more vast and nuanced. I find it appalling, however, that I have had to continue post–
graduate studies to be exposed to this type of academia. The fact that this is not included in how IR is taught in undergraduate first–
year introductory units, nor even rhetorically engaged with outside of the lens of political violence is ridiculously limiting and
borderline colonial in regard to the weight that western concepts of Realism and Liberalism get.
Sara was passionate and engaging and taught the unit with the aim of giving students the best understanding and grasp of Islam
as a nuanced and legitimate political concept that needs to be treated with far more respect that it gets. It is a new area of IR that I
will be pursuing actively thanks to Sara, and a unit I am really glad I picked.
